Artist Statement
Through drawing and painting, I’m able to investigate myself and others by dissecting the human body into fragments and layers. I use art to examine myself and the world around me by digging deeper into what interests and inspires me. I’m intrigued by how our individuality is defined, by the surface of our skin and what’s underneath this membrane. I depict human anatomy in a way that isn't just a study, but a complex exploration of who we are and what makes us unique. Sometimes it’s a journey into myself and my own perception of my body and how I relate to the world, at other times it’s a journey into other people’s lives to examine how their bodies and minds function.
My paintings and illustrations are intricately detailed because I am interested in the skills of creating traditional anatomical drawings by hand, as well as creating a realistic quality. Through a variety of materials like pencils, pens, ink, watercolor, and oil paint I can get the precision and color that I desire to accommodate my vision.
Detail allows me to focus and lose all sense of time, which creates a zone where nothing else seems to matter except what I’m doing. In this way, art acts as a form of meditation. I transfer my thoughts and emotions into the work and get not only a sense of resolve and peace, but also the satisfaction of tackling my inner battles.
